  • U.S. Mint First Spouse 1/2 oz Gold Coins at BGASC

The First Spouse Gold Coin Program is a series of gold bullion coins issued by the US Mint, celebrating the First Ladies of the United States. Every First Lady from Martha Washington to Barbara Bush has a gold coin dedicated to them. Learn more about these U.S. Mint First Spouse 1/2 oz Gold Coins, right here at BGASC.

    Series Background

These coins contain 1/2 oz of .9999 pure gold, with each coin having a face value of $10 (USD) backed by the federal government. This unique coin program was authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 and was first issued in 2007.

Every First Lady from Martha Washington to Barbara Bush was released from 2007 to 2016. The only First Lady in that period to not have a coin in this series is Rosalynn Carter, due to the fact that President Jimmy Carter is still alive.

Once a former president passes away, they are given their own coin in the Presidential $1 Coin Program, and then the first lady who served with that president is given a 1/2 oz coin.

Each release features two unique strikes, uncirculated and proof.

    Designs

The obverse of each coin features a portrait of the First Lady being honored. Some presidents served without a first lady, in those situations, a depiction of Lady Liberty is displayed.

Each reverse depicts a design that represents a specific aspect of that first lady’s life, legacy, or something that was of importance to them.

Uniqueness to the U.S. Mint First Spouse 1/2 oz Gold Coins

When browsing through the U.S. Mint First Spouse 1/2 oz Gold Coins you’ll notice that there is some uniqueness to the series in terms of presidents with no first ladies, first ladies who served twice, or presidents with multiple first ladies.

    • President Thomas Jefferson had no First Lady. A Draped Bust portrait of Lady Liberty is used for this issue.
    • President Andrew Jackson had no First Lady. A Capped Bust portrait of Lady Liberty is used for this release.
    • President Martin Van Buren had no First Lady. A Seated Liberty design is used for this coin.
    • President John Tyler had two wives during his reign. Thus, the 10th release in this coin program has coins for both Letitia Tyler and Julie Tyler.
    • President James Buchanan had no First Lady. A Liberty Coronet is used for this release.
    • President Grover Cleveland served two non-consecutive terms. Thus, Frances Cleveland is featured on the 22nd and 24th releases in this coin program.
    • President Woodrow Wilson, similar to John Tyler, has two wives during his term. Therefore, both Ellen Wilson and Edith Wilson are featured in the 28th release.
