Series Background

These coins contain 1/2 oz of .9999 pure gold, with each coin having a face value of $10 (USD) backed by the federal government. This unique coin program was authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 and was first issued in 2007.

Every First Lady from Martha Washington to Barbara Bush was released from 2007 to 2016. The only First Lady in that period to not have a coin in this series is Rosalynn Carter, due to the fact that President Jimmy Carter is still alive.

Once a former president passes away, they are given their own coin in the Presidential $1 Coin Program, and then the first lady who served with that president is given a 1/2 oz coin.

Each release features two unique strikes, uncirculated and proof.

Designs

The obverse of each coin features a portrait of the First Lady being honored. Some presidents served without a first lady, in those situations, a depiction of Lady Liberty is displayed.

Each reverse depicts a design that represents a specific aspect of that first lady’s life, legacy, or something that was of importance to them.
