Platinum Coins & Bullion Bars

Platinum Coins & Bullion Bars at BGASC

Platinum has had an up-and-down history in terms of investment value but has reached new heights in popularity over the years. Most coin programs have included a platinum option for their annual BU coin programs, and you can now find several unique Platinum Bars as well. Platinum is a versatile metal as it’s not only used in the bullion world, but it can also be found in catalytic converters, electrodes, and dental equipment, among others. American Platinum Eagles

One of the most well-known Platinum Coin series is the American Platinum Eagle. The series debuted in 1997, over a decade after the inception of the American Gold Eagle and the American Silver Eagle programs.

While design elements have been fairly consistent for the gold and silver coin programs, the American Platinum Eagle has one of the most complex histories in terms of design elements.

The BU American Platinum Eagle has featured the same design on both the obverse and reverse since the inception of the coin program in 1997.  The obverse was designed by John Mercanti and shows a front-facing relief image of the face of the Statue of Liberty. The reverse, designed by Thomas D. Rogers, shows an eagle soaring over America. The sun can be seen rising from the bottom of the coin.

The proof American Platinum Eagle is the one with the complex history. The designs mentioned above appeared as well on the 1997 release of this coin. From 1997-2017 remained the same. However, from 1998 to 2016, the reverse changed with every year of issue. Each reverse image was a part of an overall collection, which includes the following:

  • 1998-2002: Vistas of Liberty.
  • 2006-2008: The Foundations of Democracy.
  • 2009-2014: The Preamble to the Constitution.
  • 2015-2016: The Torches of Liberty.

In 2017, the original 1997 obverse and reverse designs were used for the 20th anniversary. In 2018, the reverse was changed to a flying eagle by Patricia Lucas-Morris. This design has been present on every reverse release since 2018. Now, the obverse is updated every year with new designs revolving around the overall series.

  • 2018-2020: The Preamble to the Declaration of Independence.
  • 2021-2025: The First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Other Platinum Coins

  • Australian Platinum Kangaroo: Platinum coins in the series debuted in 2018. They showcase the same design elements as the Australian Silver Kangaroo.
  • Austrian Platinum Philharmonic: Platinum coins in this well-known series were introduced in 2016. The design of these coins is the same as the Austrian Gold and Silver Philharmonic series.
  • British Platinum Britannia: Platinum coins were first struck in 2018, 31 years after the debut of the British Gold Britannia. The series has coins available in a 1 oz and 1/10 oz weight and shows Phillip Nathan’s Britannia on the reverse.
  • Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf: The Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf debuted in 1988 alongside the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf. The series shows the sugar maple leaf of Walter Ott on the reverse and the reigning British monarch on the obverse.

Certified Platinum Coins

Another popular option is to purchase Certified Platinum Coins. A certified coin is one that was graded by a professional coin grading provider such as the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) or the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS).

These coins are graded on a 1-70 scale and then returned to the owner in a protective plastic slab, to preserve the condition of your platinum coin. For more information about certified coinage, you can check out our Certified Silver Coins page.

Platinum Bars

Another option is Platinum Bars. Platinum bars offer more availability as they don’t often have mintage caps, unlike platinum coins. Some popular platinum bar producers are the following:

  • Argor Heraeus: Argor Heraeus platinum bars display the identifying marks of the bar on the obverse, with a repeating pattern of the logo on the reverse.
  • PAMP Suisse: PAMP Suisse added platinum bars to their Fortuna series. The obverse shows the Roman goddess, blindfolded, holding coins in her hands. The reverse showcases identifying marks of the bar.
  • Valcambi: Valcambi platinum bars display the identifying marks of the bar on the obverse, with the full name of the company on the reverse.
