Obverse

The obverse of the 1999-W Proof American Gold Eagles showcases the renowned image of Lady Liberty by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The background displays radiant sunrays, a ring of stars, and the U.S. Capitol Building.

History

In 1999, all four weights of the Proof Gold Eagle Series saw a boost in demand as the Y2K concerns intensified. Among these, the 1/10 oz coin had the smallest year-over-year increase but retained the highest mintage of all weights. The 1 oz gold coin, however, recorded the second-lowest mintage behind the 1/2 oz coin, but had the largest overall increase in demand, jumping from 25,886 the previous year to 31,427 in 1999.
