Obverse
The obverse of the 2020 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle Coins features the iconic design of Lady Liberty by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This timeless image, originally gracing the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933, symbolizes Liberty as the guiding light leading the nation toward an unknown future. Inscriptions read LIBERTY, and 2020.
Reverse
Flipping the coin reveals the reverse side adorned with an entire family of American bald eagles, a design meticulously crafted in 1986 by Miley Busiek exclusively for the American Gold Eagles. It portrays a male eagle soaring above the family nest, with a female eagle and a hatchling nestled within. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 5 DOLLARS.
History
The 1/10 oz Gold Eagle has consistently held its place as one of the most sought-after gold coins from the United States Mint since its inception in 1986. It often competes with the 1 oz Gold Eagles for the top-selling position, surpassing the 1 oz coin in pivotal years such as 1995, along with notable sales years including 1996 and 1999 through 2002. Setting impressive mintage records within the series, the 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle achieved a significant milestone in 1999 by selling 2.75 million coins, nearly double the number of 1 oz coins sold that year. Since 2014, the 1/10 oz Gold Eagle has consistently outpaced other weights, notably in 2019 when sales surpassed 100,000, reaching 140,000 coins.
