Obverse

The 2024 South African Gold Krugerrand’s front side shows a bust of Kruger, who was known as Oom Paul (Uncle Paul in Afrikaans) during his time. This special portrait was made in the 1890s for gold coins in the South African Pound category.

Reverse

Flipping the coin to the back, you’ll find the Springbok antelope, gracefully bounding across the savanna. This design has been a hit since the 1930s and has been on the Krugerrand since day one in 1967.

History

Krugerrand is a mix of the modern South African currency, the Rand, and a famous leader from the 19th century named Paul Kruger. Kruger was a big deal he was the President of the South African Republic, a Boer state, for a few different terms. He started in 1883 and had another go from 1888 to 1898. Kruger was all about standing up for Afrikaners and making sure they stayed free from British rule.
