Product Description
The Great Britain Gold Sovereign is among the most widely recognized gold coins available today. The modern Sovereign follows the design principles first introduced when the Royal Mint revived the coin in 1817. Obverse
On the obverse of the 2025 Great Britain Gold Sovereign is the official portrait of King Charles III. Designed by Martin Jennings, this left-profile effigy was introduced in 2022 following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. The portrait maintains the established tradition of depicting British male monarchs without a crown on non-coronation coins.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2025 Gold Sovereign showcases Pistruccis famous design of St. George in battle with a dragon. His portrayal reflects the artistic influences of classical antiquity, with St. George riding without stirrups, similar to ancient cavalry figures. The level of detail in this compositiondown to the fine plumes on St. Georges helmetdemonstrates Pistruccis masterful craftsmanship and has helped ensure the longevity of this design in numismatic history.
History
The reverse design of the Gold Sovereign continues the tradition of Benedetto Pistruccis 1817 artwork. This timeless depiction of St. George shows him on horseback, delivering a decisive strike against a dragon. Pistruccis composition draws from classical Greco-Roman artistic influences, emphasizing movement and dramatic detail. The intricate design captures elements such as the flowing cape and well-defined musculature of both horse and rider, highlighting the enduring appeal of this historic coin.
