Most Great Britain 1/2 Gold Sovereign Coins feature St. George and the dragon on the reverse. Exceptions include early coins from William IVs and the early years of Queen Victorias reign, which had different designs like a crowned shield. Later coins return to the popular St. George and the dragon design by Benedetto Pistrucci.

The Great Britain 1/2 Gold Sovereign has a rich history. Typically, “Great Britain Gold Sovereign” refers to coins made after 1817 when Britains coinage was redesigned. These coins have their roots in the English sovereigns first minted in 1544 during King Henry VIIIs reign.

Half sovereigns were issued regularly for circulation from 1817 to 1926, with special issues released until 1936. Production stopped in the 1970s but resumed in 1980 during Queen Elizabeth IIs reign. These later issues were made as proof and bullion coins rather than for everyday use.
