1/4 oz American Gold Eagles
1/4 oz American Gold Eagles from BGASC
The American Gold Eagle Series has been available from the United States Mint since 1986. The BU Gold Eagles are offered annually without interruption, while the Proof Gold Eagles and Burnished Gold Eagles have been relatively stable in production since the program started. When it comes to BU Gold Eagles, the 1/4 oz Gold Eagle is one of the lowest-minted coins in the program.
Production History
When the series started in 1986, the 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle was offered as a BU specimen alongside the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/10 oz gold coins. Since that time, the BU 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle has not missed a production date. When it comes to the other versions, the 1/4 oz Gold Eagle has a different history. It was not offered in the Proof Gold Eagle Series until 1988, debuting alongside the 1/10 oz gold coin, and was only available in the Burnished Gold Eagle Series from 2006 to 2008.
The Proof Gold Eagles and Burnished Gold Eagles have a combined three date marks that are missing across the two collections. There were no Proof Gold Eagles nor Burnished Gold Eagles struck by the US Mint in 2009. All available gold blanks were diverted to BU Gold Eagle production to ensure the US Mint could meet its obligation to investors amidst the crushing demand of the Great Recession. Additionally, Burnished Gold Eagles were suspended again in 2010, resulting in no 1/4 oz Proof Gold Eagles in 2009 and no 1/4 oz Burnished Gold Eagles in either 2009 or 2010.
Mintage Records for 1/4 oz Gold Eagles
Like its compatriot, the 1/2 oz Gold Eagle, the highest mintage recorded for the 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle came back during its debut issue in 1986. Demand has ebbed and flowed for the BU Gold Eagle since that time, with the 1/4 oz Gold Eagle never recapturing its early heights, while also setting some very low mintage records in the series. The highest mintages recorded in the BU 1/4 oz Gold Eagle Series include the following dates:
- 1986 – 726,031 coins
- 1999 – 564,232 coins
- 1998 – 309,829 coins
- 1987 – 269,255 coins
- 2015 – 158,000 coins
One area where the 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle has proven popular, early on anyhow, is in the Proof Gold Eagle Series. The 1/4 oz Proof Gold Eagle actually holds the third-highest overall mintage among the four coins, ahead of any given date in the 1 oz gold weight and behind only two issues of the 1/10 oz gold weight. The highest mintages recorded for the 1/4 oz Proof American Gold Eagle include:
- 1988 – 98,028 coins
- 1990 – 62,674 coins
- 1989 – 54,170 coins
- 1991 – 50,839 coins
- 1994 – 48,172 coins
Like the other weights of the Burnished American Gold Eagle Coin, the 1/4 oz Burnished Gold Eagle was only available from the United States Mint from 2006 to 2008. During that period, its mintage figures declined annually from 15,188 in 2006 to 12,766 in 2007, and finally 8,883 in 2008.
