1 oz Gold American Eagles
1 oz American Gold Eagles from BGASC
Since the introduction of the American Gold Eagle in 1986, no single option in the series has proven as dominant as the 1 oz Gold Eagle. Available annually in the BU Series, and issued with only minor disruptions in the Proof and Burnished Series, the 1 oz American Gold Eagle is unquestionably the most popular coin in the collection for investors and collectors.
Production History of 1 oz Gold Eagles
As mentioned above, the 1 oz American Gold Eagle has never experienced an interruption in its production at the US Mint. The Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 mandates that the US Mint strike the coins each year to meet the demand of investors. As such, the 1 oz BU Gold Eagle has been issued each year.
The same is not exactly true for the 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle and 1 oz Burnished Gold Eagle. In 2009, both coins were suspended as the US Mint redirected all of the available gold blanks it had to strike 1 oz BU Gold Eagles amidst the crushing demand of the Great Recession. Following 2009, the Proof Gold Eagle returned in 1 oz gold, but the Burnished Gold Eagle was absent again in 2010 as the US Mint continued to face intense demand.
Mintage Records
The 1 oz BU Gold Eagle is one of the best-performing coins from the United States Mint, behind only the 1 oz BU Silver Eagle when you look at mintage figures. Since 1986, the 1 oz BU Gold Eagle has had the highest mintage figure 26 different years. When it comes to mintage records, the 1 oz BU Gold Eagle has four of the five highest mintages recorded for any individual weight in the series (1999, 2009, 1998, 1986). As for its five highest mintages, the following dates have the highest mintages for 1 oz BU Gold Eagles:
- 1999 – 1.5 million coins
- 2009 – 1.493 million coins
- 1998 – 1.468 million coins
- 1986 – 1.362 million coins
- 2010 – 1.125 million coins
The numismatic versions of the 1 oz Gold Eagle, the 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle and 1 oz Burnished Gold Eagle, have much lower mintage records. The numismatic coins have higher premiums and do not tend to attract investors interested in large quantities. The following are the five highest mintages recorded for the 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle:
- 1986 – 446,290 coins
- 1987 – 147,498 coins
- 1988 – 87,133 coins
- 1990 – 62,401 coins
- 2010 – 59,480 coins
More recently introduced than the 1 oz BU Gold Eagle and 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle, the 1 oz Burnished Gold Eagle has a shorter history and is less established with collectors than the Proof Gold Eagle. The mintage records for the 1 oz Burnished Gold Eagle are even lower than the Proof Series:
- 2006 – 45,053 coins
- 2007 – 18,066 coins
- 2008 – 11,908 coins
- 2011 – 8,729 coins
- 2018 – 8,518 coins
