Palladium Coins at BGASC

While most coin programs haven’t fully introduced Palladium Bullion options yet, there are still some that have embraced the silvery-white precious metal. Although it was discovered in 1803, palladium has been in relatively high demand in the 21st century, with one factor being its popularity in the bullion market. American Palladium Eagle

The American Silver Eagle and American Gold Eagle debuted in 1986. The popularity of each coin program led to the American Platinum Eagle in 1997. Finally, the American Palladium Eagle made its debut in 2017.

Issued in just a 1 oz weight, each release contains 1 Troy oz of .9995 pure palladium and has a face value of $25 (USD). BU strikes are available in plastic flips, while other strikes (proof, reverse-proof, burnished) come in a presentation box from the US Mint.

The obverse design features the Winged Liberty design of Adolph A. Weinman. This was created in 1916 and was originally featured on the Mercury Dime. Liberty is seen in left-profile relief wearing a winged Phrygian cap. Inscriptions read Liberty, In God We Trust, the year of issue, and a mint mark.

The reverse showcases the original design of Adolph A. Weinman to be used on the Mercury Dime. This design though, has never been used on American coinage. It shows a bald eagle perched on a cliff, clutching a sapling in its beak and talons. Inscriptions include United States of America, $25, 1 oz. pd .9995 fine, and E Pluribus Unum.

While other American Eagle series produces multiple strikes annually, the American Palladium Eagle releases different strikes each year.

Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf

The Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf is regarded as the first major palladium bullion coin on the market. The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) introduced the series back in 2005. These coins were issued until 2007, and once again in 2009. Production was halted from 2010 to 2014 before resuming in 2015. Canadian Palladium Maple Leafs have been issued every year since.

These coins are issued in just a 1 oz weight. They contain 1 Troy oz of .9995 pure platinum and have a face value of $50 (CAD). These coins feature the same designs as other Maple Leaf Coins such as the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf and Canadian Silver Maple Leaf.

Russian Palladium Ballerina

One of the most well-known palladium coin series is the Russian Palladium Ballerina. These are known as some of the first modern palladium bullion coins in the world. The Moscow Mint introduced them in 1989 and issued them every year until 1995. These coins were struck in both BU and proof strikes and include 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights.

Each new issue featured a new image of a Bolshoi ballerina on the obverse. The reverse of these coins displays the well-known hammer and sickle, a popular symbol of the Soviet Union.
